A reporter sparked an abrupt response from comedian Russell Brand when he asked him how much he pays in rent at a protest on the issue at Downing Street.
The Essex born comedian, 39, was being interviewed at the New Era Estate protest outside 10 Downing Street by Channel 4's Paraic O’Brien when he was asked how much he paid for his home in the capital.

After replying that it was rented, he was pressed to give a precise figure for how much he pays to live there, but refused.

He replied: "I'm not interested in talking to you about my rent, mate. I'm here to support a very, very important campaign and you as a member of the media have an important duty to represent these people - not to reframe the argument in a ridiculous way."

He's right. It would be a differnt story if he was a Landlord himself, but how much he personally pays is his own business.

Cant imagine many people, especially in the public eye would want to openly talk about how much they earn or pay for things

I dont understand it all to be honest. if you cant afford to live somewhere then you have to move dont you? its unfortunate, but that's the whole point of buying somewhere isnt it? so you dont have to move unless you want to?

and if the rent is going up, and they are going to fall short, then how about trying to better themselves by getting a better paid job?

The rent is likely to triple. So its not a trivial amount.

Secondly, unless you live on a spaceship or in a cave, "getting a better paid job" is a bit harder than posting those pathetic words on a forum.

Saw that this morning.

He had no right to ask how much he paid for his home or how much he paid in rent but I think the reporter had a right to ask about Big money coming in to the area and buying up the property seeing as that could be a potential reason for rising housing costs and needs in that area.

I like Brand enough and Im one to generally defend him in terms of him being there to push massive issues ,that generally go under the carpet, in to the public arena and in his own words, he is not there to offer solutions, but I do think he could have answered the question about the wealthy buying up all the properties as his landlord, that he obviously supports, may have other properties that are not reasonable forcing hardship on tenants. If you are saying that you are against something but willingly participate in it the you are opening up yourself as a bit two-faced.

His stance on animal cruelty is another area in which he does half measures. Acknowledges that Slaughtering animals is barbaric and Dairy farming is no better but wont kick the cheese and milk in to touch.

Having said that, if you watch his videos, he will openly talk about his need to improve himself is those areas so he is at least aware of his seeming double standards.

There is no relevance to his rent and as he said he was just there supporting these people .... and probably making sure the reporter turned up.
It like saying Bob Geldof shouldn't be raising money for Africa because he doesn't personally have EBOLA

I think the interviewer did well to question him, and RB had valid responses, until the regretful parting shot which I'm sure he regrets :/

A mate was in a similar situation in central London recently, commercial landlord rather than residential but rent went up at rent review due to area gentrification from 40k per annum to 60k a 50% increase, been there 10 years, just closed made four staff redundant. Managed to assign the last 5 years on the lease to another, Chinese apparently.

Not really anyone's business how much he pays in rent, but I don't think Brand's foray into politics has gone very well. He's not really as clever as he thinks, and his stance as a millionaire anti-capitalist is a bit hypocritical, to be frank.

For the record, I like him as a comedian and he seems a likeable chap, but I think he ought to stick to comedy.
